Are You Ready to Discover More of Jesus? Part 1

Are You Ready to Discover More of Jesus? Part 1

In this post, it is my delight to spend some time simply writing about Jesus. I hardly know Him, though, it’s true. But I know just enough to be enamoured with Him. Yet, I may not always feel that way; sometimes, I feel a thousand miles away from Him because feelings come and go, but that makes no difference. In my heart of hearts, in my identity as a child of God, in my spirit, I am absolutely enamoured with Him, and taking the time to sit and meditate on Him reminds me of that truth.

If we have had even the smallest encounter with Jesus, we know He is someone special, someone extraordinary. We soon realise He is indeed not of this realm. And each time we get another glimpse of Him, we are overcome with unearthly delight all over again. This reminds me of the many times throughout Scripture when those who encountered Jesus in His glory fell to the ground. Who can stand in the presence of Jesus unless He so graciously enables us?

In one of my recent posts Don’t Be Afraid of the World Right Now I mentioned that I was keen to write at greater length about two things:

  1. The deity of Jesus
  2. Different aspects of Jesus

Concerning the deity of Jesus, I said that was a big topic, and it is. If clarification is needed, I view Scripture through a trinitarian lens; it is obvious to me that God is three persons. Over the last few years, Derek and I have been making particular note of every Scripture we come across that points to Jesus’ deity and the Godhead community, and it is extraordinary and undeniable. But yes, a big topic, and one I don’t feel equipped to tackle. However, because all the different aspects of Jesus flow out from His deity, as we dive into them I believe we will discover a greater view of His deity and the community of the Godhead by default.

In my new book, To the New Creation, I include a diagram that lists a number of Christ’s titles and scriptural adjectives used to describe Him. It is a non-exhaustive list of course, but I’m going to use that as my springboard. Having said that, first off the rank in the aspects of Jesus Christ is His title:

The Word of God

This title for Jesus most certainly touches on His deity, although some would argue with me if they read Scripture through a unitarian lens, which, as I said, I do not. The Word of God is the very first title for Jesus recorded in Scripture, according to the chronology of time as written by John in Chapter 1 and verse 1. Let’s take a look at ‘The Beginning’.

  • Gen 1:1  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
  • Jhn 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  • Jhn 1:2  He was in the beginning with God.
  • Jhn 1:3  All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
  • Col 1:16  For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
  • Col 1:17  And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
  • Rev 19:13  He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.

Based on these Scriptures alone, we see the following:

  • God and the Word are one.
  • Jesus is the Word.
  • Jesus existed before all things because He is the Word and the Word is God.
  • At the end of the ages, Jesus is the One clothed in a robe dipped in blood, called The Word of God.

If we think about what it means to be somebody’s word, we might imagine some invisible mist that flows out from the person’s mouth, causing and catching the vibration of the person’s vocal chords to make sound, having risen from the deepest part of the person. Their words express the person’s thoughts, beliefs and heart, like the sound of piano keys express the imaginations, meditations and emotions of the composer.

Out of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). My word cannot be separated from me. Nobody else can give voice to my word, it is mine as much as my breath and my sight. My word expresses me. In the same manner, nobody can give voice to God’s word except God.

As the Word, Jesus is the expression and explanation of all that God is. He is not separate to God, He is God. Genesis records the first words out from God’s mouth, saying ‘Then God said, ‘Let there be light’ (Genesis 1:3). Light is the revealing, the revelation, the making known. Jesus was in the ‘said’. God spoke Jesus who is light and the revelation of God and all that He is. When God spoke…Jesus-the Word. And through that person, the Word, came everything that was made.

At Jesus’ transfiguration, we were advised by God to listen to Jesus. If we want to know God’s mind, we’ll hear it from Jesus. If we want to understand God, we’ll understand Him by knowing Jesus, the Living Word.

Just prayerfully meditating on the above points could take us into marvellous revelations of our Lord, enlarging our current view of Him. It is always good to ask the Holy Spirit to open our understanding. Yet, I know there is much, much more to discover of Jesus through this one title description of Him. I pray for a widening of my spiritual eyes to see more of Him through it.

I’m sure many of you could share incredible insights the Lord has given you into Jesus as The Word of God. That’s why this is a discovery ‘together’. I would really value and appreciate you sharing what insights you have been given concerning Jesus as The Word of God, or Jesus as The Word. Please share by commenting so that I and all who come across this blog can discover more of Him alongside you.

The wonder of our Lord Jesus is His endlessness. Father, open the eyes of our hearts that they may be enlightened. Grant us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him who is our life.

God’s blessing to you this day, saint, is Jesus Christ, The Word of God.
