Are You Ready to Discover More of Jesus? Part 2
Are You Ready to Discover More of Jesus? Part 1 focused on the title and aspect of Jesus as the Word of God. Shortly after posting, a number of Scriptures came to mind in relation to this, which led me to read through Psalm 119. As I meditated on that Psalm, I could see Jesus, the Word of God, everywhere. For example,
Your word, O LORD, is everlasting; it is firmly fixed in the heavens. (Ps 119: 89)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Ps 119:105)
This psalm speaks all about God’s ways, precepts, laws, testimonies, commandments and statutes, all of which are connected with His word. Jesus is God’s way, the fulfilment of the old law and is the law of life we now live by. He is truth and life. Jesus is the testimony of God and His wisdom that brings us counsel day and night as that lamp that lights our path beneath our feet. Because of that, He is all of God’s statutes; He is God’s standard, God’s paradigms and boundaries. As we read through the psalm, we can see the name Jesus wherever we read the words: ways, precepts, laws, testimonies, commandments and statutes, and wherever there is a reference to God’s ‘word’.
As my husband also studied the psalm, he saw that all those phrases speak of God’s judgements, and as we know, all judgement has been given to the Son (John 5:22-24). Jesus said in John 5:30 that His judgement is righteous because He only judges according to what He hears from the Father. So, Jesus is the righteous judgement of God in word and in nature. As I said, He is God’s standard.
In John 6:63, Jesus said,
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
Jesus’ words are defined as life, but also as spirit. His words come from a place not of this realm, a place that is eternal – out from God who is spirit (John 4:24).
When Jesus asked His disciples if they were going to leave Him, in John 6:68, Simon Peter replied,
Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
Obviously, in Peter’s experience, there was something clearly different about the words that Jesus spoke. Peter recognised openly that Jesus holds the words of eternal life. God is the creator of all things; all life comes from Him; Jesus is the Word through whom all things were created, and Jesus is THE life.
Hebrews 1:1-3, says:
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
This verse resembles Colossians 1:17b, which we looked at in the last post. It says, ‘In Him all things hold together’.
The Word of God is described in Hebrews 4:12 as sharper than any two-edged sword, and in Revelation 1: 16 Jesus is described as having a sharp two-edged sword coming out of His mouth. What does this tell us? That Jesus is the Word of God, able to separate and divide between bone and marrow, between flesh and spirit.
The Word of God is a person, an eternal person, and as the Word of God, it is Jesus Christ upon whom we stand. In the face of temptation and trials, we needn’t rack our brains in panic trying to recollect Scriptures to stand upon as though there is some magic power in the written words on their own. All Scripture speaks of Jesus and He Himself holds the words of spirit and life.
The Holy Spirit will bring Scriptures to mind naturally as we look to Jesus, and as needed because part of His role is to bring to mind all that Jesus has said. And as He does that, we will see more of Jesus. The Spirit will open the written word to reveal the Living Word, and there we will find our hope and strength. It is to Jesus that we look; we call on His name, look into His face, and stand upon Him as our Rock. At times, standing on the Word of God may simply be a matter of speaking Jesus’ name.
Do we want to know the mind of God on a matter? Look to Jesus.
Do we need to hear God’s word for a situation? Look to Jesus.
Do we need instructions? Look to Jesus.
Do we need counsel? Look to Jesus.
Do we need the Word of God to stand against the enemy? Look to Jesus.
Jesus Christ, a resurrected living person in glory, is our victory in everything–the very Word of God.
