He Is The Way

He Is The Way

Over the last couple of years, Disney released The Mandalorian series. The Mandalorians are bounty hunters and part of a sub-culture that could be likened to a religious sect. They serve one purpose, and their missions are ultimately toward that purpose. Those in the inner circle, who passionately serve in the cause, follow a creed. There are frequent scenes where they counsel one another with this statement “This is the way”.

In Jeremiah 31:31-34, God foretells a new way is coming; a new covenant between Him and His people, one by which He will make Himself known to all, from the least to the greatest.

“Behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the LORD, “I will put My law within them, and on their heart, I will write it, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. “They will not teach again, each man his neighbour and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the LORD, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

Through Jesus Christ, God has put His law within us and written it on our hearts. Through Christ, God has been revealed to all, and all are free to know Him.

In Matthew 11:17, Jesus tells His followers He did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfil it. He is God’s way and means of our entering into the new covenant God has made with us, that all may know Him, from the least to the greatest. Jesus is the way, and we are followers of The Way.

It may seem too casual or simple to treat Jesus as the way concerning everything in our lives. For instance, when you are sitting at your desk at your place of employment, trying to find your way through an accounting issue. Or perhaps you are writing a script for that movie God placed in your heart long ago when you’ve never done it before. What about when your GPS is broken, and you need help finding your way to your destination? Maybe you are trying to change your eating and exercise habits to help with longevity. Or needing a place to live when the landlord wants you out of the house.

It might even seem silly or a little trite to expect Jesus to be the way in such things. It seems more acceptable that Jesus would be the way concerning ministry, relationships, salvation for our unsaved friends of course, and for healing. But to believe Jesus can’t possibly be the way concerning our everyday lives is to be misled. Sometimes our religious backgrounds have misrepresented all that this Christ is, and we put Him in a box, or as some have suggested, we make Him a footnote to the Christian life.

“I am the way, the truth, the life”. (John 14:6)

The thing with Jesus is, His words were limitless. When He said He was the way, He meant the way entirely. How can that be? Because He is THE truth. And because He is THE life. That means all that truth is, all that life is, is Him. And because all truth and life is Him, He is the way.

How do we take hold of Jesus as the way in all things? By faith. Believing in Him and all He is, we turn our hearts to the Lord and tell Him we take Him as the way forward in the scenario we face, that He is the answer and will lead us through. With a grateful heart, we thank Him, by faith and in trust, for being our guide and solution.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Jesus is the Word of God. Jesus is the lamp in the New Jerusalem; He is the light of the world. We do well to discard our religious paradigms, our skewed concepts that He is only the way in certain areas, and we must find “our” way in others. No, we are never the way. We never have our way of truth or life; there is only One.

In the 1970’s, there was a great move of the Holy Spirit across America and North America, that reached even as far as Australia and some other nations, affecting the youth. Thousands of young people were radically saved and transformed. Many of our best “influencers” today in the kingdom of God came as a result of that move of the Spirit.

Like the Mandalorians, they also had a mantra; “One Way”. You may be familiar with Keith Green’s album cover, a photo of him pointing his finger to the sky. That was a common symbol among the young people in those times, as they preached Jesus Christ, the One Way.

It is good to encourage one another daily. So in your planning today, I remind you, He is the Way. As you deal with the burdens in your heart, I remind you, He is the Way. I encourage us to learn from the radicalised Christian youth of the 70’s and point you to Jesus, the One Way.

Following the example of the fictional Mandalorians, may we counsel one another with the truth and life of Jesus Christ by postfixing our deliberations with “He is the Way”.

Thank You, Almighty God, for your new covenant; that through Jesus Christ, Your One way, we have come into the knowledge of You, and Your law is now written on our hearts because of Him who lived and died for us and lives again. We praise You, O Lord, that we each can know You, that You are our God, and we are Your people.

  1. Nailed it, Donnalee. I have found so many contemporary Christians just don’t ‘get’ the new covenant of Jesus, and are so much the poorer for it. By sheer grace, how rich we are ‘in Him.’

    1. Indeed Erroll! I like how you say, by sheer grace. That is so true. Sending blessings to you and yours. Sorry, I haven’t been on here for a while; I may have missed a few of your posts. I have a bit of catching up to do 🙂
