Are You Ready to Discover More of Jesus? Part 3

If you’ve missed them, you can click on the links here to read Part 1 and Part 2. Today’s post, which continues this series intermittently among other posts, focuses on Jesus as Light.

What a glorious light, a marvellous light, a heavenly light! In the beginning, God said, ‘Let there be light’. And all things came into being through Him. Jesus boldly and humbly exclaimed of Himself, ‘I am the light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life’ (John 8:12). Again in John 9:5, He says, ‘While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world’.

The apostle John said of Jesus that in Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. He said the Light (Jesus) shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it (John 1:4-5). The darkness in this world cannot overcome the light of Jesus Christ; He will always outshine the darkness. His light is pure holiness and glory, brighter and more radiant than the sun! In all its power and magnificence, the sun cannot even compare with the light that is Jesus Christ!

God says in Isaiah 60:19-20:

No longer will you have the sun for light by day, nor for brightness will the moon give you light; but you will have the Lord for an everlasting light, and your God for your glory. Your sun will no longer set, nor will your moon wane; for you will have the Lord for an everlasting light…

In the book of Revelation, the holy city is described as having no need of the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb (Rev 21:23). Jesus Christ is the revealing glory of God! The nature of Jesus is eternal. He will be the lamp in the heavenly New Jerusalem city, although He is that lamp now; to all men. He has revealed the Father to us as the image of the invisible God, and He illuminates the mind of God to us by the Holy Spirit. He guides us through the dark, lighting the path before us, bringing revelation, wisdom and understanding. He lights the way because He IS the Way.

In Luke 2:25-32, we read of a man named Simeon, whom God had promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. Taking the baby Jesus into his arms, he exclaimed to the Lord His God:

For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES, and the glory of Your people Israel.

Jesus Christ restores sight to the blind, delivering us from spiritual darkness, for He is our light and our salvation (Psalm 27:1). John describes Jesus as the true Light, which, coming into the world, enlightens every man! (John 1:9). Jesus is the love of God shone into our hearts by the Holy Ghost, and through faith in Him, He has filled us with Himself, filling our once-darkened hearts with heavenly light. We have been transported from the kingdom of darkness into His glorious light, into the kingdom of God.

In Ephesians 5:8, Paul exhorts the followers of Jesus Christ to walk as children of Light, saying that though we formerly walked in darkness, we are now Light in the Lord. He repeats a quote, ‘Christ will shine on you’. Jesus is the light or the lamp unto our feet (Psalm 119:05). He leads us in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake (Psalm 23:3). These paths of righteousness reflect Christ as our light. Proverbs 4:18 says, the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn! It shines brighter and brighter until the full day! Jesus Christ is that light, into which we walk further and deeper until that marvellous final day when we will stand before Him and He will welcome us home.

In 1 John 1, John states that God is Light. He says in Him, there is no darkness. He says that if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we will also have fellowship with one another. So, the apostle John calls Jesus the Light and God the Light. He then says that the Light is already shining. How beautiful is that! Yes, Jesus. You are God, and You are Light, already shining in our hearts and this dark world. We see You, Jesus. We see God by Your Light, for You are the Light.
